Microsoft is quietly updating the branding of its dedicated gaming interface in Windows 11. The latest Windows 11 Experimental Build 26300.8758 shows a small but notable change: the feature formerly known as “Xbox mode” is now labeled “XBOX mode.”
Part of a broader brand shift
This name change aligns with a larger rebranding effort across Microsoft’s gaming division. Earlier this year, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma polled fans on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the capitalization of the brand name. The feedback overwhelmingly favored the all-caps “XBOX” styling.
Since then, Microsoft has updated its official website, social media handles, and the Microsoft Store to reflect this change. The update in Windows 11 is simply the latest step in unifying that visual identity across platforms.
What is XBOX mode?
Originally launched as “Xbox Fullscreen Experience” and later shortened to “Xbox mode,” this feature provides a console-like interface on Windows PCs. It is designed to work seamlessly with controllers, making it particularly useful for gaming handhelds or users who prefer navigating their PC with a gamepad.
When enabled, the mode prioritizes gaming performance by reducing background tasks. According to Microsoft, this can free up to 2GB of RAM, which is a significant boost for systems with limited memory. The feature also includes quality-of-life improvements, such as easier sign-in options using a PIN.
What this means for you
For most users, this is purely a cosmetic update. If you are running the Windows Insider Experimental channel, you will see the new “XBOX” label in your settings. The functionality of the mode remains unchanged at this time.
Microsoft continues to refine the experience through its K2 initiative, aiming to smooth out bugs and improve performance before the feature reaches wider audiences. As the company prepares for the next generation of hardware, including the rumored Project Helix, these branding updates signal a tighter integration between Windows gaming and the Xbox ecosystem.
