Microsoft extends free Windows 10 security updates to October 2027

Microsoft has updated its support documentation to confirm a significant extension for Windows 10 users. The Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which provides critical security patches after mainstream support ended, will now run until October 12, 2027. This is a full year longer than the previously announced end date of October 2026.

How to get free updates

If you are still running Windows 10, you can continue receiving these security patches at no cost. The requirement remains the same: you must sign in to your device with a Microsoft account. If you are already enrolled in the program, Microsoft states that your coverage will automatically continue through the new end date without any action needed on your part.

For those who have not yet enrolled, or for users who prefer to use a local account, there are paid options. You can enroll by paying $30 USD or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft reward points. However, if you simply switch to a Microsoft account login, the updates remain free.

Why the extension matters

This extension comes at a crucial time. Windows 10 officially ended its standard support lifecycle in October 2025. Without ESU enrollment, devices would stop receiving security patches, leaving them vulnerable to malware and exploits. With hundreds of millions of PCs still running Windows 10, this one-year extension ensures that users who cannot or choose not to upgrade to Windows 11 immediately can keep their systems secure.

Industry analysts suggest this move may also be a response to current hardware market conditions. High RAM prices and increased costs for new PC components have made upgrading less financially viable for many consumers. By extending support, Microsoft allows users to squeeze more life out of existing hardware without compromising on security.

What this means for you

If you are using a Windows 10 PC, check your account settings. Ensure you are signed in with a Microsoft account rather than a local offline account. This simple step guarantees you receive the extended security coverage through October 2027. If you are already enrolled, you can rest easy; no further steps are required.

For IT professionals managing enterprise environments, note that this free extension applies specifically to consumer-grade enrollments via Microsoft accounts. Enterprise ESU licensing terms may differ, so verify your organization’s specific coverage status through Volume Licensing channels.
