Cooler Master V8 ACE 3DHP Review: V8 Aesthetics Meet Serious Air Cooling Performance

For years, all-in-one liquid coolers have been the default choice for high-performance PC builds, but air cooling is making a serious case for a comeback. The Cooler Master V8 ACE 3DHP is one of those coolers that demands attention the moment you pull it out of the box. It borrows heavily from automotive history with a V8 engine-inspired shroud, but the real story lies in the fin stack hiding beneath that retro exterior.

At the heart of this cooler is a departure from traditional heatpipe layouts. Instead of relying solely on curved pipes, Cooler Master has integrated two vertical “3D heatpipes” that run directly through the baseplate and up through the heatsink fins. This design aims to move heat away from the CPU die faster than standard arrays. After spending time with the unit, it’s clear that this isn’t just a cosmetic gimmick—it’s a functional evolution of a classic design philosophy.

Design and Build Quality

Cooler Master has a long history with V8-themed coolers, dating back to the V8 GTS in 2013. That earlier model was so aggressive it looked more like an alien motorbike engine than a PC component. The V8 ACE 3DHP tones that down slightly, settling into a single-tower configuration that still captures the spirit of a muscle car engine block. The shroud is plastic, so don’t expect it to double as a paperweight, but the aesthetic is undeniably striking for those who want their hardware to look like hardware.

Under the hood, the cooler features a dense array of fins paired with four traditional heatpipes and the two vertical 3D heatpipes. The unit is substantial, measuring 138.95 x 136.47 x 167.3mm and weighing in at 2.57 lbs (1.17 kg). That weight is something you need to account for, especially if you’re mounting this on a motherboard with weaker CPU socket reinforcement.

The cooler comes with two 120mm PWM fans. The front fan pushes 89.6 CFM of air, while the rear fan moves 61.0 CFM. These are thick 30mm fans, which generally means they can move more air at lower RPMs, potentially reducing noise. However, under heavy load, we measured noise levels reaching around 55 dBA. It’s not deafening, but it’s audible in a quiet room, which is typical for high-static-pressure air coolers.

One interesting detail is the socket support. The AMD version (AM4/AM5) is the primary focus, with a baseplate specifically tuned for AMD’s heat spreader geometry. However, Cooler Master includes mounting brackets for Intel LGA 1851, 1700, 1200, and 115X sockets in the box. While it works on Intel, the AMD-specific tuning suggests you’ll get optimal performance if you’re running a Ryzen processor.

Performance Benchmarks

Numbers don’t lie, so we installed the V8 ACE 3DHP on our open-air test bench running an AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D. This is a high-TDP chip that runs hot, especially when pushed to around 5.2GHz. We ran a sustained 15-minute stress test to see how the cooler handled the thermal load.

The results were solid. The V8 ACE 3DHP maintained an average temperature of 81.5°C, with a peak of 83.5°C. For context, our standard comparison cooler, the ~$35 Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, ran slightly warmer under similar conditions. This puts the V8 ACE 3DHP in the upper tier of air coolers, proving that the 3D heatpipe design does offer a tangible advantage over standard dual-tower setups.

Tom’s Hardware has also conducted extensive benchmarks on this cooler, and their data aligns with our findings. They noted that the cooler performs exceptionally well in both single-fan and dual-fan configurations, making it a versatile option for builders who might want to experiment with fan curves later.

One thing worth noting is the noise profile. While 55 dBA is on the higher end for idle or light loads, it’s expected for a cooler of this density. The fans themselves were quiet, with no rattling or bearing noise detected during our testing. If you’re sensitive to acoustic output, you may need to tune your fan curves to keep the RPMs in check during gaming or video editing sessions.

Installation and Compatibility

Despite its imposing size, installing the V8 ACE 3DHP was surprisingly straightforward. The cooler attaches to the standard AM5 backplate using four thumbscrews, two mounting plates, and four additional screws for security. The process is tool-friendly and doesn’t require any contortions or awkward reaching.

The fans are designed to slide off the heatsink for easier installation. You can attach the mounting brackets first, secure the cooler, and then snap the fans back into place. They daisy-chain together, simplifying cable management by giving you just one connector to route to the CPU_FAN header. This is a thoughtful touch that saves time during the build process.

Clearance is tight, but manageable. On our test rig with G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB RAM and a Gigabyte X870E Aorus Master X3D ICE SSD, the cooler fit without issue. There was a small amount of breathing room over the RAM modules, which is typical for a cooler of this height. If you’re using particularly tall RAM sticks, you may need to check compatibility charts before purchasing.

One caution for builders: the fans slide on rails, which is convenient but means they can slip if you’re not careful when handling the cooler. We learned this the hard way when one fan slid down while we were adjusting our grip. It didn’t fall, but it was a close call. Handle with care, especially when moving the cooler from the box to the test bench.

What This Means for You

If you’re building a high-end PC and want to avoid the potential leak risks of an AIO, the V8 ACE 3DHP is a compelling option. It delivers performance that rivals many liquid coolers in the $100-$150 range, and it comes with the added benefit of zero maintenance. You won’t need to worry about pump failure or thermal paste degradation over time.

However, this cooler demands respect for your case’s airflow. It’s a dense fin stack that needs a constant supply of cool air to work effectively. If you’re building in a compact case with poor ventilation, you might see higher temperatures than our open-bench results suggest. Make sure your case has at least one front intake fan to feed the cooler, and consider an exhaust fan at the rear to pull hot air out.

For AMD users, this is a no-brainer. The dedicated AM5 baseplate ensures optimal contact with the CPU, and the performance numbers back it up. Intel users can also benefit, but they should be aware that the cooler is tuned for AMD first. If you’re on Intel, you’ll still get great performance, but you might not be getting the absolute best possible thermal transfer.

The Cooler Master V8 ACE 3DHP is currently available for $119.99 on Newegg. Amazon also lists it at the same price via Newegg Business, which is a good alternative if you have a Prime account. We did notice it listed at a higher price on Best Buy, so we’d recommend sticking with Newegg or Amazon for the best deal.

Availability is currently skewed toward the AMD version. The Intel variant isn’t listed on Cooler Master’s US store or major retailers yet, so if you’re an Intel user, you may need to wait for broader distribution. In the meantime, the included brackets mean you can still use the AMD version on Intel boards, even if it’s not the perfect fit.

Overall, the Cooler Master V8 ACE 3DHP is a well-engineered air cooler that brings back a classic aesthetic with modern thermal technology. It’s heavy, it’s loud under load, and it needs good airflow, but for builders who want top-tier cooling without the complexity of liquid cooling, it’s a strong contender.
