id Software dev responds to Xbox layoffs: ‘We hope our pain was worth it’

3 min read Editorial

Microsoft’s latest restructuring has delivered its most significant blow yet to game development studios. The company announced cuts totaling 3,200 roles across Xbox and gaming divisions. This includes 1,600 immediate terminations and another 1,600 reductions planned over the next 12 months.

Among those affected is id Software, the studio behind the DOOM franchise. Reports indicate that roughly half of the studio’s workforce has been let go, impacting both game developers and engineers working on the id Tech engine.

A developer’s stark message

The scale of these cuts has sparked intense reactions from within the industry. Skai Chow, a gameplay animator at id Software, took to social media to address those celebrating the layoffs as necessary corporate adjustments.

Chow posted an image detailing five previous rounds of Microsoft and Xbox job cuts since early 2023. The graphic highlights:

  • January 2023: 10,000 jobs cut across Microsoft
  • Early 2024: 1,900 roles eliminated in gaming divisions
  • May 2024: Closure of Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Games, and Tango Gameworks
  • 2025: Shutdown of The Initiative and other projects

Captioning the image with “We hope our pain was worth it,” Chow directed a pointed message at observers who view these cuts positively. “For my friends and followers who don’t work in game development celebrating and worshipping that the layoffs yesterday were ‘necessary for change and a move in the right direction’…I sure hope the sixth round of layoffs is worth our pain and your pleasure,” Chow wrote.

Context behind the cuts

The timing of these announcements coincides with the release of new content for DOOM: The Dark Ages, including its Revelations DLC. This juxtaposition has heightened the shock among fans and employees alike.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has framed these reductions as part of a broader “reset” strategy. She stated that the division had previously overextended itself through rapid expansion and overly complex internal systems. The goal, according to leadership, is to streamline operations and focus resources more effectively.

What this means for you

For Windows gamers who rely on titles from id Software or other Xbox studios, these cuts signal significant uncertainty. While Microsoft aims to stabilize its gaming division, the loss of experienced talent at key studios like id Software could impact future development cycles.

The id Tech engine powers not only DOOM but also major franchises like Wolfenstein and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Reducing the team behind this technology may have long-term implications for game quality and release schedules across multiple titles.

As the industry continues to grapple with post-pandemic overinvestment, it remains unclear whether these drastic measures will achieve the stability Microsoft seeks or further disrupt creative output.
