Xbox sets goal to entertain 1 billion daily users amid massive restructuring

3 min read Editorial

Xbox has officially outlined an ambitious new target: entertaining more than one billion people every single day. CEO Asha Sharma announced this goal alongside a major corporate restructuring plan that includes significant workforce reductions and the departure of several key development studios.

The path to 1 billion daily users

Sharma stated in a recent update that she wants Xbox to be among the few companies capable of reaching this massive audience. The company currently reaches approximately one billion players annually, but shifting that metric to a daily basis represents a substantial increase in engagement.

To put these numbers in perspective, Steam reports roughly 147 million monthly active users, while PlayStation sits at around 125 million monthly active users. Achieving one billion daily interactions would require Xbox to expand far beyond its current footprint in the gaming industry.

The goal includes engaging users through streaming apps and media consumption, not just active gameplay sessions.

Analysts suggest this goal may rely on expanding into regions where Xbox has limited official presence, such as parts of Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe. However, reaching that scale through hardware sales alone faces significant logistical and regulatory hurdles in markets like Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

A broader definition of entertainment

There is another interpretation of Sharma’s statement. She specifically used the word “entertain” rather than “play.” This distinction could mean Xbox is counting usage across its entire ecosystem, including streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, Twitch, HBO Max, and others available on Windows PCs and Xbox consoles.

If the metric includes media consumption alongside gaming, the target becomes more achievable. It shifts the focus from pure game sales to total platform engagement, leveraging the device as a general living room or desktop entertainment hub.

Restructuring and studio changes

This strategic pivot comes amidst significant organizational changes. Xbox plans to cut more than 3,200 jobs between now and 2027, with 1,500 layoffs occurring immediately. The company is also parting ways with at least four studios: Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory.

Unlike some industry closures, these teams are not being shut down entirely. Some will become independent entities, while others may find new homes under different publishers. The future of Arkane Lyon remains complicated, with reports suggesting budget issues impacting their current projects.

What this means for you

For everyday Windows users and Xbox fans, this restructuring signals a shift in focus toward high-impact, widely accessible content. While the loss of beloved studios is concerning, the emphasis on broad entertainment suggests Xbox will continue to prioritize cross-platform availability and Game Pass integration.

The company claims it will invest as much in Xbox as ever before, but with “greater focus” and “discipline.” Users should expect a streamlined portfolio of titles rather than a wide variety of smaller projects. The goal is clear: maximize reach across all devices, including Windows PCs, to hit that billion-user mark by 2027.

Over to you: Do you think counting streaming app usage helps Xbox reach its billion-user goal, or should it focus strictly on gaming metrics?
