Microsoft has confirmed that Microsoft Teams will soon include an in-meeting toggle allowing organizers and presenters to disable AI features like Copilot, Facilitator, and Intelligent Recap during live calls. This update follows significant user feedback regarding the lack of control over automated AI interactions.
The new Meeting AI toggle
Microsoft announced the change via its admin portal, stating that the feature, labeled “Meeting AI,” will give licensed organizers and presenters direct control over AI activity. The toggle allows users to turn on or off specific components such as Copilot responses, Facilitator notes, and meeting recaps independently.
You can choose to disable all AI features at once, keep them all active, or manually adjust individual settings based on the needs of the current call. For example, you might want to keep transcription enabled while disabling Copilot’s ability to generate summaries or answer questions in the chat.

Rollout timeline and availability
The update begins rolling out to the Targeted Release channel in early July 2026. Microsoft expects general availability to start in mid-July, with full deployment completed by the end of July 2026. The feature will be available across all platforms, including Windows, macOS, mobile devices, and web browsers.
Existing compliance and licensing requirements remain unchanged. The toggle only appears if your organization’s tenant policies allow Meeting AI features. If an admin has explicitly disabled these features via Group Policy or Intune, the toggle will not appear for users in that environment.
Transcription dependencies
There is a technical dependency between Meeting AI and transcription services. Enabling Meeting AI automatically turns on transcription and generates a recap. Similarly, starting transcription manually enables Meeting AI and recap generation.
If you need to ensure no AI processing occurs during a meeting, you must keep both transcription and Meeting AI toggled off. Note that these controls only apply to new meetings; they do not retroactively affect notes or recaps generated in previous calls.
What this means for you
This update addresses privacy concerns and workflow preferences by giving users granular control over AI involvement. While some find Facilitator useful for task tracking, others prefer to disable it to avoid distractions or data processing. The new toggle ensures that AI tools remain optional rather than mandatory during professional calls.
Microsoft is also testing other improvements, including simpler meeting controls to reduce accidental screen shares and an Efficiency mode to improve performance on lower-end PCs. These changes aim to balance advanced AI capabilities with user autonomy and system stability.
