Microsoft has officially removed 3D Viewer from the Microsoft Store. This move confirms the final phase of the app’s retirement, meaning you can no longer download or install it on a fresh Windows installation.
The end of an era for 3D Viewer
This isn’t sudden news. Microsoft has been winding down support for 3D Viewer for some time, gradually shifting focus toward other viewing tools within the Windows ecosystem. The removal from the Store is the logical conclusion to that process.
If you already have 3D Viewer installed on your device, it remains functional. Microsoft isn’t forcing an uninstall or breaking existing shortcuts. However, if you format your drive, perform a clean install of Windows, or try to add the app to a new machine, it simply won’t appear in search results.
What happens to your 3D files?
You might be wondering how to open STL, OBJ, or GLB files now that the dedicated viewer is gone. Microsoft has been steering users toward Paint 3D and other integrated tools for some time. While Paint 3D also saw a reduction in prominence recently, the core functionality for viewing basic 3D models hasn’t vanished—it’s just less centralized.
For power users or those who rely on specific 3D formats, third-party alternatives like Blender, Meshmixer, or dedicated CAD viewers are now the primary recommendation. The built-in Windows experience for casual 3D viewing is becoming thinner by the day.
What this means for you
If you’re a casual user who occasionally opens a 3D model, you won’t notice an immediate change if the app is already on your PC. But if you’re setting up a new computer or troubleshooting a missing app, don’t bother looking for 3D Viewer in the Store anymore.
For IT professionals managing deployments via Intune or Group Policy, note that existing packages referencing 3D Viewer may still work for current installations, but new provisioning scripts should account for its absence. Plan your asset management accordingly to avoid broken links in your software libraries.
