It has been nearly a year since Obsidian Entertainment launched Grounded 2 in Early Access on Xbox, PC, and Xbox Game Pass. The studio, alongside co-developer Eidos-Montréal, has shipped three major updates to refine the survival experience. Now, game director Chris Parker is looking ahead to what he calls the team’s “second launch” with a massive content drop and a new platform arrival.

The Into the Abyss update

Obsidian is preparing to release Into the Abyss, the largest content update for Grounded 2 to date. Scheduled for August 11, this patch surpasses the previous Garden (Toxic Tangle) update in scope. The update introduces a new water-themed biome centered around the Pond area.

Parker confirmed that swimming is returning as a core gameplay mechanic. Players will also encounter a new buggy companion and access additional underwater activities. This expansion marks a significant step in the game’s roadmap, adding depth to the open-world survival loop.

Co-development with Eidos-Montréal

The collaboration between Obsidian and Eidos-Montréal has matured significantly since development began. Parker noted that while the teams faced initial struggles, they have established a smooth workflow. Ideas now flow freely between studios, with both sides actively supporting and expanding on each other’s concepts.

This synergy is evident in the upcoming Pond storylines and biome design. The efficient partnership allows Obsidian to focus on delivering high-quality content updates while maintaining the game’s core identity. Players can expect continued stability and feature additions as the two studios work together.

PlayStation 5 arrival

Grounded 2 will launch on PlayStation 5 alongside the Into the Abyss update, effectively serving as a second major release for the title. Parker described this moment as a “second launch,” bringing a fresh wave of players into the community. This follows the original Grounded game, which arrived on PS5 in 2024, two years after its full 1.0 release.

While Xbox has recently emphasized exclusive titles like Clockwork Revolution, Parker emphasized his desire for maximum player engagement across all platforms. The PS5 release expands the potential audience without detracting from the game’s presence on Windows and Xbox consoles.

What this means for you

If you have been waiting for more content in Grounded 2, August 11 is the date to mark on your calendar. The return of swimming and new underwater mechanics fundamentally change how you explore the backyard world. Additionally, if you are a PlayStation user, you will finally be able to join the co-op survival experience without needing an Xbox or PC setup.

For current players, the update promises significant replayability with new biomes and companions. The improved co-development process suggests that future updates may arrive with similar scale and polish. Keep an eye on the official channels for more details on the underwater features before the launch.
