Chinese Makers Are Ditching Apps for AI Agents — Here’s What Changes

Chinese smartphone manufacturers are taking a path that looks nothing like Apple or Google’s mobile playbook. Instead of adding AI features on top of the existing app ecosystem, companies in China are building phones where the operating system itself runs an AI agent that functions across and, in some cases, entirely replaces traditional apps.

The shift is already visible in devices shipping today. ZTE’s Nubia NaviX Ultra runs ByteDance’s Doubao AI agent and has no home screen or conventional app store. StepFun’s StepX Neo uses a proprietary operating system called Step AOS with a built-in agent named Step Amoo that recombines phone functions based on user goals. Honor’s MagicOS 10 devices ship with the YOYO Intelligent Agent, developed with input from Alibaba.

All three phones rely on Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) to give the agents system-level access. None of these devices will reach the United States. ZTE is banned by the FCC over national security concerns, while StepFun and Honor are building exclusively for the Chinese market.

#1 How agentic AI phones actually work

The core difference between these Chinese devices and Western smartphones comes down to where the AI lives. Apple and Google have added AI capabilities through apps you download or services built into the OS, but the app layer remains the primary interface. You open apps, tap buttons, and navigate menus.

The Chinese approach flips that model. The operating system includes an agentic AI layer that sits at the system level. Rather than asking you to open a specific app to complete a task, the agent understands what you want and executes it across multiple services. StepFun’s StepX Neo breaks phone functions into four primitives: communication, apps, files, and system tools. The agent then recombines those primitives based on what you’re trying to accomplish.

This isn’t a minor UI tweak. It represents a fundamental restructuring of how users interact with their devices. The phone no longer presents a grid of icons to choose from. Instead, it responds to intent and handles the execution.

#2 The economic logic behind the shift

Apple and Google have every reason to resist this model. Apple takes between 15% and 30% of app revenue. Google’s Play Store historically accounts for roughly 17% to 26% of its operating income, according to estimates introduced during the Epic v. Apple/Google litigation. The entire economic foundation of iOS and Android depends on the app layer.

An agentic layer that dissolves apps into tasks threatens that revenue model. Apple and Google are unlikely to allow third-party agents to replace the app layer of their mobile operating systems anytime soon. The Chinese OEMs, however, have no stake in the app economy. They can dismantle it without triggering a revenue crisis.

The impact is already showing up in app store data. Mobile app in-app purchases dropped by roughly 40% by early 2026, even as average spending per purchase increased. The shift is driven by subscriptions to AI services and what the source describes as “vibe-coded apps,” signaling a transition from the traditional app model to AI-powered replacements.

#3 Robot phones and the attachment economy

China is also pushing hardware in a direction Silicon Valley hasn’t explored. Honor is developing what it calls a “robot phone,” a device that uses AI to control physical robotic components built into the phone itself.

A leaked unboxing video of the Honor Robot Phone appeared on Weibo this week. The device features a gimbal with a 200-megapixel camera that can track moving subjects using AI while the phone remains stationary on a table or tripod. It also stabilizes footage when you’re walking.

But the more notable aspect is what Honor is calling “self expression.” The phone can shake its “head” no, nod yes, or perform a “backflip” to cheer you up. The device is getting a personality through physical gestures and body language.

Honor plans to launch the robot phone on August 12 in China. These devices are even rarer than agentic AI phones, but they represent another departure from the static pane of glass design that has defined smartphones for over a decade. The phone has a body. It moves. It responds physically.

What this means for you

If you’re outside China, these devices won’t be available to you. ZTE’s FCC ban and the China-only focus of StepFun and Honor mean you won’t see these phones in US retail or carrier stores. The agentic AI approach is currently a Chinese market experiment.

However, the economic pressure these devices create could force changes in how Apple and Google approach AI. If agentic AI phones succeed in China, they will likely expand internationally. That would bring not only hardware sales but also Chinese super-apps, Chinese financial services, and Chinese AI-based information systems into global markets.

Even if you never buy a Chinese phone, the shift toward AI agents that replace apps may eventually reach Western platforms. The question is whether Apple and Google will adapt to that model or try to maintain the app-centric ecosystem that currently funds their businesses.

What to watch next

The next 12 months will reveal whether agentic AI phones can gain traction beyond China. Honor’s robot phone launch on August 12 will provide the first real-world look at physical AI integration in smartphones. The broader market response to in-app purchase declines will show whether users are already moving away from the traditional app model.

For Windows users, the implications are indirect but worth tracking. Microsoft’s AI strategy for Windows and mobile operates within the existing app ecosystem. If the app model erodes globally, Microsoft will need to adjust how it delivers AI capabilities across its platform.

The Chinese smartphone market is splitting from the American one. The only open question is whether the rest of the world will follow the Chinese agentic AI approach or stick with the US AI app model.
