Xbox update brings longer gamertags, cloud play during updates, and better Xbox 360 support

Microsoft is rolling out a new set of dashboard improvements for Xbox consoles through the Xbox Insider Program. The latest update, currently available in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring, focuses on refining user experience fundamentals with changes to gamertags, backward compatibility features, and download management.

#1 Longer gamertags for unique names

The most visible change in this update is an expansion of the character limit for Xbox gamertags. Previously capped at 12 characters, unique gamertags can now contain up to 15 characters. This allows players more flexibility to create a handle that better reflects their identity without resorting to abbreviations or numbers.

This increase applies only to gamertags that are both unique and available. If you choose a name that is already taken, the system will still enforce the 12-character limit and append a random numerical suffix to ensure uniqueness. Additionally, the new limit does not apply if the chosen name contains non-Latin characters.

#2 Game hubs for Xbox 360 backward-compatible titles

Xbox 360 games played via Backward Compatibility now feature dedicated game hubs within their dashboard cards. Previously, these older titles lacked the rich metadata views available to native Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games.

With this update, you can quickly view achievement progress, screenshots, and other useful information directly from the game card. This change brings parity to the library, ensuring that classic titles feel integrated into the modern Xbox UI rather than treated as secondary content.

#3 Play via Cloud Gaming while downloading

For Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, a new feature allows you to stream a game via Xbox Cloud Gaming while the local installation or update downloads in the background. This effectively eliminates the wait time between finishing a download and starting to play.

You can jump into the cloud-streamed version immediately, letting the console handle the heavy lifting of downloading and installing the game files locally for future offline play. Note that this functionality is limited to titles that support streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

#4 Wishlist additions from game cards

The update also simplifies how you track upcoming or unreleased titles. You can now add games directly to your wishlist from their respective game cards on the dashboard. This works for both currently released and future titles, making it easier to bookmark interests without navigating away from the current screen.

What this means for you

If you are part of the Xbox Insider Program in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring, you can test these features now. For general users, these changes signal a continued push by Microsoft to refine the core console experience. The ability to play while downloading is particularly useful for large game patches, saving time on busy evenings.

These updates align with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s recent commitment to delivering frequent improvements to fix platform fundamentals. While broader organizational changes continue within the division, the user-facing software is seeing steady enhancements aimed at smoothing out daily interactions.
