Windows 11 26H2 Will Enable Point-in-Time Restore by Default for All Users

According to an updated Microsoft support document, the company will enable Point-in-Time Restore by default for all users running Windows 11 version 26H2 or newer.

This change signals a major shift in how Windows handles system recovery. Rather than relying on manual intervention or cloud-based reinstalls, your PC will automatically maintain local backup points, allowing you to revert to a previous state instantly if something goes wrong. Here is everything you need to know about the feature, how it works, and what it means for your system.

What is Point-in-Time Restore?

Point-in-Time Restore is a recovery feature built on top of the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). VSS is the underlying technology that creates snapshots of your files and volumes, even while applications are actively using them. This ensures that the backup data is consistent and not corrupted by ongoing read/write operations.

With this feature active, Windows 11 automatically creates a restore point at fixed intervals. These backups capture a comprehensive snapshot of your system, including:

  • The exact operating system build and state of Windows 11.
  • All installed programs and applications.
  • Configured settings, such as desktop backgrounds and accent colors.
  • Local account data and other user profiles.

Windows retains these backup points for up to 72 hours. Once a new point is created, older ones are automatically managed to free up space. This automated approach removes the guesswork from system recovery, ensuring you always have a recent, working state to fall back on.

Why Enable It by Default?

The decision to enable this feature by default stems from user feedback and the limitations of previous recovery tools. While Windows 11 still includes the traditional System Restore, that tool requires manual activation and primarily focuses on system files, drivers, and registry settings. It does not capture personal files or provide a complete system state rollback.

Point-in-Time Restore addresses these gaps by running automatically in the background. It captures a much broader range of system data without requiring user input. Additionally, because the restore points are stored locally on your device, the recovery process does not require an internet connection. This is particularly useful in scenarios where network access is unavailable or when a corrupted network driver prevents booting into a recovery environment.

By making this the default behavior, Microsoft is essentially providing a safety net that works for everyone, regardless of technical expertise. It reduces the likelihood of users being stranded with a broken PC that requires complex troubleshooting or a full reinstall.

How to Enable Point-in-Time Restore Manually

You do not need to wait for Windows 11 26H2 to roll out to your device. If the feature is already available on your current build, you can activate it immediately through the Settings app.

To turn it on, navigate to Settings > System > Recovery. Scroll down to the Point-in-Time Restore section and toggle the switch to On. If the option is grayed out or unavailable, your system may not yet support the feature, or it may already be enabled by a previous policy update.

System Requirements and Storage Impact

While Point-in-Time Restore is designed for broad compatibility, there are specific hardware requirements for the feature to be enabled automatically. The primary constraint is storage capacity. Your Windows OS volume must be at least 200GB in size. If your drive is smaller, the feature will not activate by default, though you may still be able to enable it manually if sufficient space is available.

Regarding storage consumption, Microsoft has noted that Point-in-Time Restore can use up to 50GB of space to maintain the 72-hour retention window. To prevent this from impacting your available storage excessively, a Maximum usage limit slider is included in the settings, allowing you to cap the space the feature can consume.

For enterprise environments, IT administrators have additional control. Through Group Policy, admins can block the feature entirely if it conflicts with existing backup strategies. Enterprise editions also offer more granular control over backup frequency, allowing restore points to be created every four hours instead of the standard 24-hour interval for consumers.

When Will Windows 11 26H2 Roll Out?

Windows 11 26H2 is scheduled to begin its public rollout in late September or early October 2026. Prior to the general release, the update will be available on the Release Preview Channel, which serves as the final testing stage for the broader Windows Insider community and early adopters.

If your PC meets the 200GB volume requirement, Point-in-Time Restore will be active as soon as you install the 26H2 update. For now, checking your recovery settings and enabling the feature manually is the best way to ensure your system is protected against future update issues.
