Microsoft is finally giving meeting organizers the power to turn off artificial intelligence features in Microsoft Teams. If you have been frustrated by unwanted AI interruptions during calls, new controls are on the way.
The update allows licensed meeting organizers to disable Copilot, Facilitator, and Intelligent Recap. This change applies across all versions of Teams, including desktop, web, and mobile clients.
1. Granular control over Meeting AI
Microsoft groups these tools under the umbrella of “Meeting AI.” Previously, disabling these features required broader administrative actions. Now, admins can use a single toggle to disable all Meeting AI features at once. Alternatively, they can enable or disable specific tools individually based on organizational needs.
This flexibility addresses concerns that AI tools might distract participants or compromise meeting focus. It also allows organizations to comply with internal policies regarding data privacy and AI usage.
2. July 2026 rollout timeline
The feature is scheduled for a targeted release starting in early July 2026. Microsoft expects this phase to complete by mid-July 2026. The general availability rollout worldwide will begin in mid-July 2026 and finish by the end of July 2026.
These dates represent a shift from earlier plans that targeted June 2026 for completion. Microsoft communicated these updates through the Microsoft 365 Message Center, which is accessible to non-admins via the archive.
What this means for you
If you are an IT administrator or a licensed meeting organizer, you will soon have direct control over AI presence in your meetings. You can choose to keep tools like Intelligent Recap for note-taking while disabling Copilot if it causes confusion.
For general users, this means fewer unexpected AI prompts during calls once your organization configures these settings. The goal is to balance productivity gains from AI with the need for human-led interactions.
