Blizzard largely spared in Xbox’s massive layoffs, but uncertainty remains

3 min read Editorial

Microsoft announced today that it is eliminating over 6,000 roles across the company, with Xbox bearing a significant portion of those cuts. While studios like ZeniMax Media and Obsidian Entertainment have faced substantial reductions, Blizzard Entertainment appears to have escaped the initial wave of layoffs largely unscathed.

Blizzard’s current status

According to sources familiar with the situation, Blizzard has seen comparatively minimal job losses during this phase of Microsoft’s restructuring. Johanna Faries, President of Blizzard Entertainment, sent an internal email acknowledging the difficult day and confirming that while many colleagues across Xbox are impacted, specific details regarding Blizzard will follow in future communications.

Faries emphasized the team’s continued focus on strategic priorities and thanked employees for their collaboration during these dynamic times. The message aimed to provide reassurance amid widespread anxiety within the gaming division.

Why Blizzard might be safe

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has previously stated a strategy focused on Microsoft’s largest and most profitable gaming franchises. Given the recent commercial success of titles like World of Warcraft, Overwatch 2, and Diablo IV, Blizzard’s portfolio aligns well with this directive.

Diablo IV recently launched its highly rated “Lord of Hatred” expansion, while World of Warcraft continues to see strong engagement following recent updates. Additionally, rumors suggest that a long-awaited StarCraft shooter may be in development, further solidifying Blizzard’s value to Microsoft.

What this means for you

If you are a fan of Blizzard games, the immediate news is positive: your favorite titles do not appear to be at risk of cancellation or major staffing disruptions right now. BlizzCon 2024 is expected to proceed as planned, and ongoing development projects remain active.

However, uncertainty remains for the medium term. Microsoft has indicated that additional reductions may occur throughout the rest of the year beyond this initial tranche. While Blizzard’s current performance suggests it will remain a priority, the broader instability at Xbox could eventually ripple through to other studios if financial pressures persist.

Broader impact on Xbox

The cuts represent a significant reset for Microsoft’s gaming division. Beyond studio layoffs, Xbox has divested four studios with another pending, and its platform team has experienced losses in engineering and sales roles. Notably, hardware development teams have emerged largely unaffected, signaling a continued commitment to console innovation.

Internally, the structure of these layoffs has drawn criticism for creating prolonged uncertainty among employees. Many workers are left wondering about their job security as the company navigates this transitional period.
