Anthropic is shifting the focus of its workplace AI from individual productivity to team collaboration with the introduction of Claude Tag. This new feature replaces the existing “Claude in Slack” integration, aiming to function less like a personal assistant you chat with in direct messages and more like a teammate embedded in your group channels.
Available for Enterprise and Team customers, Claude Tag is designed to retain context across multiple conversations and participants. Instead of starting from scratch every time you open a new thread, the AI remembers what has been discussed previously within the channel.
Shared memory and autonomous tasks
The previous iteration of Anthropic’s Slack integration was limited to interacting with one person at a time, even if others could see the responses. Its context window was also restricted to the last 20 messages in a channel. Claude Tag removes these constraints.
With the new system, you can ask the AI to complete tasks independently. It will return with results and provide a log detailing how it completed the work for your review. The tool can also schedule follow-up actions for itself, allowing projects to progress over hours or days without requiring constant manual prompting.
An “ambient” mode is also included. When enabled, the AI proactively surfaces relevant information from other connected channels and tools. It notifies teams about important updates and follows up on unresolved discussions or pending tasks, acting as a shared memory bank for the group.
Governance and admin controls
Because Claude Tag operates at the channel level rather than the individual user level, it introduces new considerations for IT governance. Analysts note that CIOs will need to rethink how they measure return on investment, looking beyond simple license counts to metrics like time savings, error reduction, and employee satisfaction.
Security and compliance are addressed through new administrative controls. System administrators can filter access to specific data, tools, and Slack channels. They can also set spending limits and create separate Claude instances for different teams, ensuring each instance is restricted only to the channels and information assigned to it.
Launch credits and timeline
To encourage adoption, Anthropic is offering promotional credits to eligible organizations. Qualified Claude Enterprise customers will receive $25,000 in credits, while qualifying Claude Team customers with at least 10 paid seats will receive $2,500. These credits are valid only for Claude Tag interactions in Slack channels and expire on September 1, 2026.
The transition to Claude Tag is scheduled for August 3, 2026. However, administrators can opt in early within the next 30 days if they wish to test the new capabilities before the mandatory switch.
What this means for you: If your organization uses Slack for project coordination, Claude Tag could reduce the time spent repeating context or searching for past decisions. For IT pros, it means reviewing new access controls and defining how AI-generated outputs are approved within your workflow.
