A Space Marine 2 mod proves Halo fans are still hungry for a third-person shooter

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has been a critical hit since its release, offering a visceral third-person shooter experience that stands out in the current gaming landscape. While the game is firmly rooted in the grimdark universe of Warhammer, the community has found creative ways to reimagine it. A new mod by creator Skykiller on Nexus Mods transforms the campaign into something familiar to Xbox fans: a Halo experience.

The Sangheili Campaign Mod

The mod, titled Sangheili Campaign, does more than just swap character models. It integrates assets from Halo Reach, specifically using Sangheili (Elite) models obtained through the Draken Warlord tool. The result is a campaign where you play as an Elite rather than a Space Marine or Ork.

The attention to detail extends beyond the protagonist. Skykiller has replaced nearly every weapon in the game with its Halo Reach counterpart. You can wield the Plasma Pistol, Carbine, Needle Rifle, Plasma Repeater, and Plasma Rifle. Even the iconic Energy Sword makes an appearance, complete with modified textures and visual effects designed to blend seamlessly with Space Marine 2‘s engine.

What this means for Halo fans

This mod taps into a long-standing sentiment among the Halo community: the franchise has been underutilized outside of first-person shooters. Since Halo Wars, Microsoft has largely stuck to the FPS formula, with only minor deviations like Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike. The success of this mod suggests there is an appetite for Halo in other genres, particularly third-person action.

Former Bungie lead Niles Sankey recently echoed these feelings, noting that Microsoft is missing a massive opportunity by not expanding the franchise further. Seeing Halo characters operate within the robust combat system of Space Marine 2 highlights what could be possible if 343 Industries or Microsoft were to greenlight a similar project.

For everyday Windows gamers, this serves as a reminder of the power of community creativity. While we likely won’t see an official Halo third-person shooter anytime soon, mods like this keep the conversation alive and demonstrate the versatility of the IP’s assets.

Over to you: Would you support Microsoft developing a third-person Halo game similar to Space Marine 2, or should they stick to first-person shooters?
