Microsoft Fixes Bluetooth on Windows 11: Nine Major Updates Being Tested

Bluetooth on Windows 11 has long been a source of frustration, and Microsoft is finally doing something about it. The company has begun testing a batch of up to nine major fixes aimed at the connectivity subsystem, delivered in a new build handed to testers in the Release Preview Channel of the Windows Insider Program.

According to the release notes, that build is 26200.9539, and it lands alongside the 24H2 and 25H2 release tracks. Bluetooth rarely earns a notable bug-fix update, and if you scan Windows 11’s changelogs from the past five years, you’ll notice how little Microsoft has touched this area. This update is a rare exception.

#1 More accurate connection state

One of the more everyday annoyances is when Quick Settings lies about your devices. Connect a headset, glance at the flyout, and it still shows the gadget as linked — or worse, a device you already disconnected keeps hanging around in the list.

Microsoft is working to make the Bluetooth on Windows 11 connection state more accurate, so the toggle and device list reflect reality instead of lagging behind what you actually did.

#2 Better calling experience

If you take calls over a Bluetooth headset during Teams or Google Meet sessions, you’ll see a small change to how volume works. Turn the volume up or down while in a voice call and Windows now surfaces its built-in volume flyout.

Microsoft describes this as improved “visual feedback of the new volume level.” The change is operating-system-wide, meaning it should behave the same whether you’re on Teams, Google Meet, WhatsApp, or Telegram.

#3 More stable Settings page

The Bluetooth & devices page in Settings has been a common crash-and-reload point when juggling audio gear. Microsoft says it is improving the stability of that page while you manage Bluetooth and audio devices.

#4 Microphone compatibility

Another fix targets microphone compatibility on certain PCs that use Bluetooth Classic Audio accessories. If your headset’s mic has been flaky on some machines, this is aimed squarely at that problem.

#5 Radio toggle bug fixed

Perhaps the most glaring issue is a bug where the Bluetooth radio could actually be turned off even though the toggle on the Bluetooth & devices page in Settings appeared enabled. Flip the switch expecting Bluetooth to be on, and it wasn’t. That contradiction is now patched.

#6 LE Audio headsets

For owners of newer Bluetooth headsets that support LE Audio, Microsoft is delivering better performance and reliability. LE Audio is the newer standard that promises more efficient audio and lower power use, so this rounds out the experience for early adopters.

The rest of the nine

Microsoft isn’t spelling out every one of the nine fixes, nor is it explaining the behind-the-scenes engineering that made Bluetooth more reliable. What you can expect, though, is faster and more correct connections, more stable links with reduced stuttering and disconnects, and better audio calling overall.

There’s also a hardware angle. OEMs like Intel are expected to ship follow-up driver updates that match Microsoft’s new quality guidelines. Intel has already begun adopting these standards with its wireless drivers, which matters because a better OS stack can’t paper over a broken driver underneath it.

A bigger driver-quality push

This Bluetooth work is part of a much larger effort. In May 2026, Microsoft gathered OEMs and hardware partners at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) to tackle what it calls the next big “ecosystem” update. The team worked with OEM, ODM, silicon, and IHV partners on what actually makes the OS unstable and how much of that blame falls on drivers.

The result is the Driver Quality Initiative (DQI), which aims to make drivers more trustworthy, remove older or low-quality drivers that cause compatibility issues, and improve the security and reliability of updates delivered through Windows Update.

How DQI actually works

Microsoft says it’s heavily investing in hardening kernel-mode drivers and moving more third-party kernel-mode drivers to user-mode drivers or Microsoft-authored class drivers. The logic is to reduce how much third-party code runs deep inside Windows, which improves security, reliability, and resiliency.

The company is also cleaning up Windows Update by deprecating outdated or low-quality drivers, and it has started rejecting known problematic driver files during the signing process before they can even be published. Rather than focusing mostly on crashes, Microsoft says it will now weigh stability, functionality, performance, power, and thermal impact. Most of these driver changes are still in progress, with more details expected later this year.

What This Means for You

For most Windows 11 users, the takeaway is simple: Bluetooth should feel less like a gamble. If you’ve ever watched a headset stay “connected” after you unplugged it, or flipped the toggle only to find nothing paired, these fixes target exactly those moments. The calling and volume feedback improvements matter most if you work from home and spend time in video meetings.

But keep in mind this is a Release Preview Channel build, so it’s aimed at testers who want a taste of what’s coming — not something you’ll install on a daily-driver PC tomorrow. And because Bluetooth reliability also depends on your hardware, the full benefit may not show until Intel and other OEMs roll out their matching driver updates.

How to Get It

To try build 26200.9539, you need to be enrolled in the Windows Insider Program and switched to the Release Preview Channel. From there, head to Settings > Windows Update and check for the latest update. If you’re not testing, there’s no need to rush — this build will eventually flow to the general public as Microsoft finishes rolling out the fixes and the OEM driver updates catch up.

If Bluetooth has been giving you trouble, the practical move is to make sure your PC is on the latest stable Windows 11 build and your Bluetooth drivers are current, either through Windows Update or your manufacturer’s support site.
