Atlus Producer Weighs In on Classic Remakes
For years, fans of the original PlayStation-era Persona games have waited in anticipation for a modern revival of these cult classics. That wait may finally be coming to an end, as Atlus has expressed a clear interest in remaking these foundational titles.
During an interview with GamerBraver regarding the upcoming Persona 4 Revival, Atlus producer Wada Kazuhisa was directly asked about the future of Revelation: Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.
Wada’s response was notably enthusiastic. He stated, “At this point, I can’t say for sure, but personally, I think it’s something we should definitely do. I think we have to do it.” While he stopped short of confirming a concrete release date or project, the sentiment from a key producer suggests these games are firmly on the company’s radar.
This admission comes at a time when the Persona franchise is experiencing unprecedented success on modern hardware, raising the question of whether Atlus will extend that momentum to its earliest entries.
The Persona Franchise is Thriving Right Now
Atlus has been on an absolute roll in recent years, bringing the Persona series to a wider audience than ever before. The release of Persona 3 Reload was met with critical acclaim, followed by the unique XCOM-style spin-off Persona 5 Tactica.
Furthermore, the upcoming Persona 4 Revival is generating significant buzz, alongside the long-awaited announcement of Persona 6. Both of these major titles are confirmed for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Game Pass, ensuring accessibility for a global audience.
The announcement of Persona 6 at the June 2026 Xbox Games Showcase hinted at a return to darker, more psychological themes. This shift in tone aligns closely with the original atmosphere of the PS1-era games, which many fans feel has been diluted in favor of the high-school simulator elements in recent entries.
Understanding the Original Persona Games
The original Persona games, released during the PlayStation 1 era, offered a distinctly different experience from their modern successors. They lacked the social link systems and time-management gameplay that define the series today.
Instead, Revelation: Persona and Persona 2 were traditional, linear dungeon crawlers. The narratives were significantly darker, tackling themes of psychological horror and apocalyptic scenarios that leaned heavily into the franchise’s roots in the Shin Megami Tensei universe.

For many fans, the appeal of these games lies in their mature protagonist. Unlike the teenage heroes of most Persona titles, the games in Persona 2 feature older characters navigating complex adult situations. This provides a refreshing narrative perspective that stands out in the JRPG genre.
Despite their critical acclaim and dedicated fanbase, these games have not received substantial updates or re-releases since their PSP ports in the late 2000s and early 2010s. This long hiatus has only increased the demand for a proper modernization.
The Scarcity Problem
One of the most pressing issues facing fans of the original Persona games is availability. These titles have become increasingly difficult to find and play on modern systems.
The situation is about to worsen significantly. Sony has announced the shutdown of the PSP and PlayStation 3 PSN stores. This move will effectively remove the primary digital means of accessing these games, making them even more scarce for new generations of players.

For those living outside of Japan or major gaming hubs, obtaining physical copies of these rare titles can be prohibitively expensive. A remake or a high-quality re-release on platforms like Xbox and PC would solve this accessibility crisis, allowing a broader audience to experience the franchise’s origins.
A Precedent for Cult Classics
Atlus has already demonstrated a willingness to revive lesser-known IP. The recent release of Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha on modern systems proved that the company can successfully bring niche titles to a new generation.
If Atlus can successfully remaster a cult classic like Devil Summoner, there is no logical reason why the foundational Persona games should be left behind. These titles played a crucial role in shaping the weird, dark, and heartwarming franchise that fans love today.
What This Means for You
While a formal announcement is still pending, the producer’s comments are a strong indicator that Atlus is actively considering these projects. For fans who missed the original releases, this represents a potential opportunity to finally experience the games that started it all.
Given the current platform strategy for Persona 6 and Persona 4 Revival, a release on Xbox and PC is highly probable. This would ensure that these classic dungeon crawlers are accessible to PC gamers and Xbox players alike, preserving the legacy of the Persona series for years to come.
