Wispr, the startup best known for its keyboard-free dictation app Wispr Flow, has officially expanded into meeting productivity. The company has launched Wispr Flow Notetaker, an AI note-taking assistant designed to capture conversations, generate structured summaries, and integrate directly with existing AI workflows. According to the company, the tool aims to remove the friction of manually tracking meeting outcomes while keeping audio processing local to your device.
Sahaj Garja, Wispr’s co-founder and CTO, framed the launch as a natural evolution of the company’s original mission. “We didn’t set out to build a dictation app,” Garja said. “The mission has always been to reshape how people interact with their devices, and dictation was the fastest way in. Notetaker is the second product on that path. Dictation took the keyboard out of writing. Notetaker takes it out of meetings, so nobody has to spend the call typing up what everyone just said.”
How Wispr Flow Notetaker Works
Notetaker operates as a standalone client rather than a virtual participant in your video conferences. You start a recording with a single click, and the software begins capturing audio from your microphone or system output. Because it does not inject a bot into Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet, there is no visible avatar or join notification disrupting the call. It also works for in-person discussions by simply placing your device nearby.
The workflow is divided into three distinct phases. Before a meeting begins, Notetaker pulls calendar metadata to display a brief overview that includes the meeting’s stated purpose and background information on the participants. Once the conversation starts, a live transcript scrolls in real time, with each speaker automatically labeled. If you zone out, a “what did I miss?” button instantly generates a summary of the talking points from the previous few minutes.
After the meeting ends, the assistant processes the full transcript and outputs a structured summary organized by topic. These post-meeting reports highlight key dates, final decisions, and assigned next steps. All recorded notes are stored within the Notetaker app, where you can search across your entire meeting history. Garja noted that the searchable archive is designed to shift meeting notes from static documents into an interactive knowledge base you can query over time.

Accuracy, Context, and AI Integration
Transcription accuracy is often the primary differentiator in this crowded market, which includes established players like Fireflies, Granola, and Otter. Wispr claims Notetaker produces more precise transcripts by leveraging additional contextual data during processing. The tool pulls from Wispr Flow’s personal dictionary, which stores user-defined acronyms, product names, and preferred spellings. It also cross-references calendar entries to better understand the meeting’s purpose and improve speaker identification.
Before generating the final summary, Notetaker re-reads the live transcript and merges it with that contextual layer to refine the output. The assistant also supports external AI connections through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This allows users to pipe transcripts and summaries directly into Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s ChatGPT, embedding meeting data into the workflows you already use instead of leaving it trapped in a separate app.
Privacy, Consent, and Data Handling for Your AI Note-Taking Assistant
The rise of AI meeting assistants has sparked significant legal and privacy scrutiny. Vendors like Otter and Granola are currently navigating separate California lawsuits alleging privacy violations tied to their recording practices. Wispr’s architecture deliberately sidesteps some of those friction points by capturing audio locally on the user’s device rather than routing it through a third-party bot.
Because the software does not join the call as a visible participant, there is currently no automated system notification signaling that transcription is active. Wispr places the disclosure responsibility on the user to comply with local recording laws, though Garja said the company plans to add automated consent messaging features in the coming weeks. The company also confirmed it does not create voiceprints or biometric profiles from captured audio, and it does not train its models on customer data without explicit consent. Free and standard-tier users must actively opt out of data usage for training purposes.
