Microsoft has spent the better part of two years pushing 16GB of memory as the baseline for a modern Windows experience, but the market is clearly pulling in the opposite direction. Leaked OEM specification sheets for Lenovo’s upcoming IdeaPad Vibe explicitly label any configuration with less than 16GB of RAM as “Non-Copilot,” even when those machines ship with advanced AI-capable silicon. This leak, first obtained by Windows Latest, highlights a growing tension between Microsoft’s local AI ambitions and the economic reality of rising memory costs.
The core issue is straightforward. Microsoft’s published requirements for the Copilot+ badge demand a 40+ TOPS NPU, 16GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM, and at least 256GB of storage. Lenovo is simply printing those exact requirements on its marketing materials. If you configure the IdeaPad Vibe with 8GB, it runs Windows 11, it processes local AI tasks, but it cannot carry the Copilot+ name. This creates a two-tier ecosystem that buyers need to understand before spending money.
The 16GB Line for Copilot+ Certification
The leaked specification sheet includes a dedicated “AI Definition” field placed right next to the processor and memory options. It reads: “16+ GB Memory Copilot+ / Less 16 GB Memory Non-Copilot.” This is not a Lenovo invention. It is a direct reflection of Microsoft’s official Copilot+ PC requirements, which mandate that specific hardware thresholds be met before the branding can be applied.

The IdeaPad Vibe can be configured with AMD’s Ryzen AI 400-series chips, including the Ryzen AI 7 445 and Ryzen AI 5 435. These processors feature NPUs capable of handling local machine learning workloads efficiently. However, memory capacity is now the deciding factor for certification. An 8GB model with a powerful NPU still falls short of the 16GB floor Microsoft has set for the badge.
The memory options for this laptop run 8GB and 16GB in single-channel configurations, then 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB in dual-channel setups. Lenovo is deliberately positioning the lower-cost tier outside of Copilot+ branding to keep the starting price competitive, particularly against Apple’s MacBook Neo. The hardware is capable, but the branding is strictly gated by RAM capacity.
Microsoft’s RAM Optimization Push for 8GB Systems
Microsoft is aware that 8GB configurations are returning to the market. In early August, the company confirmed that “Memory optimization for 8GB and above” is in development, with a target delivery by the end of 2026. The goal is to reduce the operating system’s memory footprint and improve responsiveness on lower-spec hardware.

This announcement comes after a messy period of shifting messaging from Redmond. Microsoft previously pushed 16GB as the practical baseline, then acknowledged that 8GB is sufficient for everyday tasks. To make Windows 11 viable on 8GB, Microsoft is removing WebView2 components from the core OS and replacing legacy interfaces with WinUI 3. This framework shift is designed to make native modern applications more efficient, reducing the background memory overhead that has historically plagued 8GB systems. These changes are incremental but necessary if Microsoft wants to maintain relevance in the budget segment.
The Split Market: Everyday Use vs. Local AI
Satya Nadella outlined Microsoft’s long-term vision during the company’s FY26 Q4 earnings call, stating, “We see significant opportunity for Windows to become the offload for unmetered intelligence, combining powerful on device compute with enterprise-grade security.” The phrase “unmetered intelligence” makes the ambition explicit: Windows is intended to become a platform for edge AI, not just a traditional operating system.

8GB RAM Windows 11 PCs can handle everyday tasks like web browsing, document editing, and media playback. They are not, however, ideal for running sustained local AI workloads. Local inference requires significant memory bandwidth and capacity to load models and manage context windows efficiently. For users who prioritize AI features, 16GB remains the functional entry point.
Microsoft has already begun blurring the lines around the Copilot+ badge to compensate for hardware limitations. The company expanded local AI APIs to PCs with RTX 30-series or newer GPUs and 6GB of VRAM, removing the strict requirement for an NPU or Copilot+ certification. This move acknowledges that a significant portion of the installed base can still run local AI, even if it cannot carry the official branding. It also makes the Copilot+ label less useful as a universal indicator of AI capability.
