Onimusha: Way of the Sword moves up release date to avoid September clash

3 min read Editorial

Capcom has officially adjusted the launch window for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The long-awaited revival of the franchise will now arrive on September 4, 2026, moving up from its previously announced date of September 25, 2026.

This change applies across all platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The earlier release is designed to help the game stand out in a month packed with high-profile titles.

Why the date changed

The original September 25 slot placed Onimusha: Way of the Sword directly against several heavy hitters, including Control: Resonant, the console version of Dune Awakening, and Silent Hill: Townfall. Launching in that window risked the game getting lost in the noise.

By shifting to September 4, Capcom positions the title against newer, unproven IPs like Orbitals and The Blood of Dawnwalker. This gives the Onimusha reboot a clearer path to capture both returning fans and new players without competing for attention against established franchises.

Players can choose between Standard, Deluxe, or Premium Deluxe editions when pre-ordering Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

Pre-order details and edition contents

If you are planning to buy the game, three editions are available on digital storefronts:

  • Standard Edition: Includes only the base game.
  • Deluxe Edition: Adds a Deluxe Kit with an alternative cosmetic outfit and gauntlet for Musashi, plus several charms and sword skins.
  • Premium Deluxe Edition: Includes everything in the Deluxe Edition, plus a Premium Kit featuring alternate costumes for Oni Lady and Okuni, haori coats for Musashi, and a digital mini-soundtrack with five songs.

Pre-ordering any version before September 25, 2026, grants access to Early Adopter Bonus items, including specific Charms and cosmetic weapon skins.

A note for Nintendo Switch 2 owners

Capcom has issued a specific warning regarding pre-orders on the Nintendo Switch 2. Digital pre-orders made for the original date will be canceled due to the schedule change. You will need to place a new pre-order if you wish to secure your copy digitally.

However, physical copies of the game for Nintendo Switch 2 are not affected by this cancellation and will remain valid.

What this means for you

For PC gamers on Windows, this is a straightforward date change. The earlier release might mean less wait time if you have been anticipating the return of the series. With a playable demo currently available on all platforms, you can test the combat mechanics and dark tone before committing to a purchase.

The shift suggests Capcom is confident in the title’s ability to draw attention without needing to ride the coattails of other major releases. If you enjoy samurai action games or have an interest in Capcom’s history, this reboot warrants a closer look.
