How to Fix Display Driver Crashed and Recovered in Windows 11

If you’ve seen a notification reading “Display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered,” or noticed your screen flicker, go black for a moment, or drop back to the desktop, your graphics driver likely hit a TDR (Timeout, Detection, and Recovery) event. Windows resets the driver when it stops responding, which usually clears the immediate problem but can repeat constantly and wreck your productivity, gaming sessions, or video calls.

This error most often points to a graphics driver problem, but it can also signal overheating, an unstable overclock, a weak power supply, or a Windows update that broke driver compatibility. The good news is that most causes are fixable from within Windows 11 without reinstalling the operating system.

Before You Start

Keep a few things in mind before you begin troubleshooting:

  • Identify your GPU. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then click the Performance tab and select Display. You’ll read your card name (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel), which you’ll need to download the right driver.
  • Note when it happens. Does the crash occur during gaming, video playback, or constantly at the desktop? That detail helps you narrow the cause.
  • Have your driver download ready. If you plan to reinstall, grab the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel on another working device so you have it on hand.
  • Create a restore point. Since one step edits the registry, create a system restore point first as a safety net.

  • The free Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) tool for a clean reinstall
  • Your GPU manufacturer’s driver installer

Step 1: Restart Your PC

Save your work and restart the computer. A simple reboot clears temporary driver states and memory leaks that can trigger a one-off crash. After Windows boots back up, use the PC normally for a few minutes and watch for the notification.

If the crash was a fluke caused by a driver that stalled during startup, it won’t return and you’re done. If the message reappears, move on to the next step, since a restart alone won’t fix an underlying driver or hardware problem.

Step 2: Update Your Graphics Driver

Open Task Manager and check your current driver version. On the Performance tab under Display, click Driver version to see what’s installed. Then visit your GPU maker’s website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and download the latest stable driver for your exact card and OS.

Install the downloaded driver and restart. Run the installer, choose a custom install if offered, and let Windows reboot afterward. A fresh driver often resolves crashes caused by bugs in an older or corrupted version.

Step 3: Roll Back the Driver if a Recent Update Caused the Problem

Click the Driver tab, then Roll Back. If the Roll Back Driver button is active, Windows has a previous driver it can restore. Click it and let the process finish, then restart your PC.

If the Roll Back button is grayed out, no earlier driver is available to restore, so skip to Step 4 for a clean reinstall instead. A grayed-out button usually means the current driver is the only one installed.

Step 4: Perform a Clean Driver Install with DDU

Download and launch Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU). This free tool strips every trace of your current graphics driver, removing corrupted files that a normal uninstall leaves behind.

Boot into Safe Mode, then clean the driver. In DDU, select NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel depending on your card, click Clean and restart, and let Windows reboot into Safe Mode to wipe the old driver.

Install the fresh driver you downloaded earlier. Once back in normal Windows, run the manufacturer installer and choose Custom / Clean Install if the option appears. This is the most reliable fix for a stubborn crash, and it also works on Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise editions.

If DDU fails to launch or the screen stays black afterward, your GPU driver may be deeply corrupted — try installing the driver manually through Device Manager’s Update driver option instead.

Step 5: Undo Any GPU or Memory Overclocking

Close any overclocking software. If you use MSI Afterburner, AMD Adrenalin overclock profiles, or NVIDIA Precision X, open them and reset clocks and memory to their default values.

Disable overclock profiles and restart. Unstable clocks are a leading cause of TDR crashes, especially under load. Returning to factory settings removes that instability.

If the crashes stop, your GPU couldn’t handle the overclock — you can try a more modest increase later, or leave it stock. If they continue, the overclock wasn’t the culprit, so keep moving.

Step 6: Check for Overheating and Clean Your PC’s Cooling

Monitor your GPU temperature. Use a free tool like HWMonitor or the performance overlay in your GPU software to check idle and load temperatures. A GPU pushing past 85-90 degrees C under load is running too hot.

Clean dust and improve airflow. Power down and unplug a desktop or shut down a laptop, then use compressed air to clear dust from fans, heatsinks, and vents. Overheated components force the driver to shut down as a protective measure.

If temperatures are normal, overheating isn’t the cause — but good cleaning never hurts and can extend your hardware’s life. If your laptop or desktop still runs hot after cleaning, you may need fresh thermal paste or better case cooling.

Step 7: Increase the TDR Delay in the Registry (Advanced)

Open the Registry Editor. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Confirm the User Account Control prompt.

Navigate to the GraphicsDrivers key. Paste this path into the address bar: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers.

Create the TdrDelay value. Right-click in the right pane, choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it TdrDelay, double-click it, and set the value data to 8 in decimal. This gives the driver a few extra seconds to respond before Windows resets it.

Restart your PC to apply the change. If you’re uncomfortable editing the registry, skip this step and rely on the driver fixes above, or restore the point you created earlier. Setting the value too high (like 10 or more) can cause hangs, so 8 is a safe starting point.

Step 8: Install the Latest Windows Updates

Check for Windows updates. Open Settings (Win + I), go to Windows Update, and click Check for updates. Microsoft frequently patches driver and display bugs through these releases.

Install any pending updates, including optional ones. Click Optional updates and look for a graphics or chipset driver listed there — installing it can resolve compatibility issues that the main update misses.

If Windows reports you’re already up to date, this wasn’t the cause. Sometimes a brand-new update actually introduces the crash, in which case uninstalling the latest optional update may help.

Step 9: Check Your Power Supply and Display Cables

Reseat your display cable. On a desktop, unplug and replug the HDMI or DisplayPort cable at both the monitor and GPU ends. A loose or faulty cable can cause signal drops that look like driver crashes.

Inspect your power supply for strain. If your GPU draws a lot of power, a weak or failing PSU can cause the driver to drop under load. Desktop users with older PSUs should consider whether the unit can handle the GPU’s power draw, especially after a new card upgrade.

If the crashes happen only during heavy gaming but not at the desktop, a power supply issue becomes more likely. Persistent crashes with no other cause may indicate a failing GPU that needs professional diagnostics.

Troubleshooting Common Failures

The new driver won’t install or errors out. This usually means the old driver is still interfering. Run DDU in Safe Mode to fully remove it, disable your internet temporarily (so Windows Update doesn’t auto-install a driver), install your downloaded driver, then reconnect. If installation fails with a specific error code, search that code on the manufacturer’s support site.

The crash continues after a clean driver install. If a fully clean driver install doesn’t help, the problem is likely hardware or system-level. Check your GPU temperature, undo any overclock, verify your power supply, and run memtest86 or the Windows Memory Diagnostic to rule out faulty RAM. Enterprise users should also check whether a group policy or managed driver is forcing an incompatible version.

The registry edit didn’t stop the crashes. Increasing TdrDelay only gives the driver more time to respond — it doesn’t fix the underlying fault. If the value change had no effect, revert it to its previous state and focus on the driver, cooling, and power fixes, which address the real cause.

Final Tips

  • Work top to bottom. Start with the simple restart and driver updates before touching the registry or hardware.
  • One change at a time. Fixing a single variable at a time tells you exactly what solved the problem.
  • Keep a backup driver. Once fixed, save a copy of the working driver so a future update failure is faster to reverse.
