How to Use HDR on Windows 11 for a Brighter, More Vivid Picture

High Dynamic Range, or HDR, can transform how movies, games, and your desktop look on a compatible display. Unlike standard dynamic range (SDR), HDR pushes a wider range of brightness and color, letting bright highlights glow and dark shadows hold detail at the same time. If you have an HDR-capable monitor or TV, turning it on in Windows 11 is straightforward — but the settings hide a few options that most people miss, and getting them right matters a lot for the final result.

Before You Start: What You’ll Need

HDR will not work on every screen, so confirm a few things before you change any settings. Step 1: Confirm your display supports HDR

Open Settings and browse to the Display section. Press the Windows key and the letter K at the same time to open the quick Settings panel, then click the Display tile. Alternatively, right-click any empty spot on your desktop and choose Display settings from the menu. This lands you on the screen that controls resolution, brightness, and HDR all in one place.

Scroll down to the HDR option and look for it. If your display supports HDR, you will see a toggle labeled “Use HDR” under the Color and HDR heading. Finding this toggle means your monitor and cable are talking to Windows correctly. Step 5: Set the SDR brightness for your desktop

Adjust the SDR brightness slider. When HDR is on, Windows separates the HDR picture from the standard dynamic range content you use every day, like web pages and chat apps. Scroll to the SDR brightness slider on the HDR settings page and set it to a comfortable level so your desktop does not look dim when you are not watching HDR content.

Confirm the HDR indicator appears. Many HDR games and some streaming apps show a small HDR badge or on-screen indicator when the feature is active. If you do not see it, double-check that you selected HDR for that specific app in Step 6, and make sure the content itself is actually mastered in HDR, since not every movie or game offers it.

Troubleshooting Common HDR Problems

The Use HDR toggle is missing. This almost always means the cable, port, or display cannot carry HDR. Try a different DisplayPort or HDMI cable, plug into a port directly on the graphics card rather than the motherboard, and update your graphics driver. If the toggle still does not appear, the display likely does not support HDR at all.

The picture looks too dark or washed out. Turn up the SDR brightness slider for everyday content, and re-run the HDR calibration to brighten the HDR profile. Also confirm you are using Vibrant mode unless you specifically want the flatter Cinematic look. Make sure your display’s own picture settings are set to a HDR or Game mode, because many TVs apply a dim movie preset by default.

Colors look wrong or flickering. Check that your display is running at its native resolution and a supported refresh rate in the Display settings. A cable that barely meets the bandwidth requirement can cause flicker or color artifacts under the extra HDR load, so upgrading to a certified HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 1.4 cable often resolves it. Update your graphics driver, and if the problem persists, try a different port on both devices.

Final Tips for the Best HDR Experience

Calibrate once, then tweak as needed. HDR calibration is personal, so spend a few minutes tuning it to your room’s lighting and your eyes. If you move your monitor near a window or change the ambient light, a small recalibration can make a big difference.

Keep your graphics driver current. Manufacturers frequently improve HDR support with driver updates, so check for them through NVIDIA GeForce Experience, AMD Adrenalin Software, or Intel Arc Central. Enterprise IT teams managing fleet displays should test driver updates on one machine before rolling them out, since HDR behavior can vary between display models.

Match content to the feature. HDR only helps when the content was mastered for it, so look for HDR10, Dolby Vision, or HDR10+ badges. Plain SDR content will not magically look better, and forcing it through an HDR path can actually make colors look off.
