Microsoft has officially confirmed that Windows 11, version 26H2 is on its way later this year. The update follows the company’s standard annual release schedule, arriving in the second half of the calendar year.
While the news confirms the next major milestone for most users, it also highlights a significant split in the Windows ecosystem. Not every device running Windows 11 will be eligible to receive version 26H2 when it launches.
A familiar platform for 24H2 and 25H2 users
For the majority of users, version 26H2 will feel like a continuation of what you already have. It is built on the same underlying platform release as Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows 11 version 25H2.
This shared foundation means that version 26H2 shares:
- The same source code base
- The same security and quality updates
- The same compatibility validation standards
Microsoft states that this approach supports a “more predictable and efficient servicing model.” The goal is to reduce disruption for organizations and individuals by keeping the core platform stable while delivering continuous innovation. If your apps and drivers work on 24H2 or 25H2, they should work seamlessly on 26H2.
Why some devices are excluded
The catch lies in the hardware-specific branch known as Windows 11 version 26H1. This is a special offshoot of Windows 11 designed specifically for devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA RTX Spark processors.
If you are currently running version 26H1, you will not be offered an upgrade to version 26H2 this fall. The reason is technical: version 26H1 is based on a newer platform release than the one powering 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2.
Essentially, version 26H1 sits on a more advanced codebase. Microsoft does not support downgrading or skipping back to an older platform branch. Therefore, users on the newer 26H1 track are ineligible for the standard 26H2 update.
What’s next for excluded users?
Microsoft has confirmed that users on version 26H1 will eventually receive a new OS version, but no specific date has been announced. Industry expectations suggest these devices may skip ahead to Windows 11 version 27H2, likely toward the end of next year.
For now, if you are on a Snapdragon X2 or RTX Spark device, expect to stay on the current platform until the next major cycle. For everyone else, keep an eye on your Windows Update settings in late September or October for the arrival of version 26H2.
