The Age of Hatred saga in Diablo 4 has officially concluded with the release of the Lord of Hatred expansion. What began as a story about Lilith’s return has evolved into a sprawling narrative spanning the base game, Vessel of Hatred, and now this final chapter. As BlizzCon 2026 approaches, it is worth looking back at the sheer number of allies, enemies, and legendary figures who did not survive the conflict.
Blizzard Entertainment has provided a retrospective on the casualties, detailing how each character met their end. Here is a breakdown of the major deaths across the three parts of the saga.
Base Game: The Cost of Lilith’s Return
The original campaign established a grim tone where survival was rare. Several key figures fell during the fight against Lilith and her father, Mephisto.
- Vhenard: Neyrelle’s mother was corrupted by demonic knowledge promised by Lilith. After attempting to kill her daughter, the Wanderer defeated her. Neyrelle later raised Vhenard briefly for a final goodbye before she passed permanently.
- Vigo: A commander of the Knights Penitent who accepted a bribe from Vhenard. Consumed by guilt, he donned the painful ‘Father’s Grace’ armor and sacrificed himself to clear a path through the Necropolis of the Firstborn.
- Rathma: The first of the Firstborn and son of Lilith and Inarius. He refused to give the Hell Key to his father, Inarius, who then struck him down, killing the ancient necromancer.
- Donan: A former Horadrim ally who fought alongside the Wanderer in Hell. He took a mortal wound that allowed the group to trap Mephisto in a soulstone, buying humanity time.
- Yorin: Donan’s son and a young knight. Lilith used him as a vessel for the demon Astaroth. Even after Astaroth was defeated, Yorin did not survive the possession.
- Meshif: A seasoned adventurer who guided the Wanderer through Kehjistan. He was cut down before he could escape the palace of an evil mage.
- Elias: A former Horadrim apprentice obsessed with Lilith’s power. After being defeated by Lorath Nahr and allies, his head was taken by the Tree of Whispers as payment for a promise.
- Inarius: The angelic father of humanity. He led forces into Hell to fulfill a prophecy but was defeated by Lilith, who ran him through with his own spear and tore off his wings.
- Lilith: The Daughter of Hatred was finally defeated in the Cathedral of Hatred. She turned to dust after warning that without her, humanity would have no victory against the greater threats.
Vessel of Hatred: Betrayal and Sacrifice
The first expansion introduced new conflicts in Nahantu and Skovos, resulting in further losses among those trying to contain Mephisto’s influence.
- Urivar: A radical Knight Penitent who led a crusade against the Horadrim. He was killed by the Wanderer during a final confrontation in Nahantu.
- Maka: A Spiritborn council member and friend of Neyrelle. She died when Mephisto’s corruption, housed within Neyrelle, lashed out at her.
- Akarat: The benevolent prophet whose spirit guided the heroes. His spirit sacrificed itself to defeat Mephisto’s harbinger, though his physical body was later stolen by Mephisto for disguise.
Lord of Hatred: The Final Toll
The latest expansion delivered the heaviest emotional blows, concluding the arcs of several long-standing characters.
- Neyrelle: After years of fighting Mephisto’s corruption and losing her hand, Neyrelle found a way to stop the Lord of Hatred. However, Mephisto tracked her down and killed her before she could fully enact her plan.
- Lorath Nahr: The last Horadrim was betrayed and killed by Queen Adreona, who had been manipulated by Mephisto (disguised as Akarat). His allies eventually burned the Tree of Whispers to release his soul.
- Queen Adreona: The ruler of Skovos was tricked into killing Lorath Nahr. Realizing her error too late, she was struck down by Lorath’s allies on the cliffs of Mount Hefaetrus.
- Mephisto: The Lord of Hatred was stabbed through the heart with a weapon made from Lilith’s body. He was banished into the Void between realms, unable to return to Hell or die completely.
